In Form and Fable in American Fiction, Daniel Hoffman writes that "Twain's usual assumption is that white persons of any status higher than trash like Pap have little knowledge of, and no belief in, superstition" 2 Superstition is mainly for slaves and boys. It is important to note that within the framework of Huck Finn, dissociating a thing from white culture is by no means casting it in poor light. In fact when put under the scrutiny of Huck's honest narration, white culture suffers badly. Miss Watson, though "good", is harsh and unkind. The King and Duke think nothing of tricking the Wilks girls out of their inheritance; even the Grangerfords, who are "quality", partake in a vicious and deadly feud. The brutalities that Huck witnesses - Buck's killing, Boggs' murder - are committed by whites. Although Pap has superstitions, folk beliefs in the story belong to Huck and Jim, the characters we most trust. While incidents like Jim begging mercy from the "ghost" Huck and Nat and the witch pie are clearly intended to make the reader laugh at the ignorance of the believers, are we not somehow left in the end with the idea that the zealous followers of superstition are somehow safer than their Christian counterparts? In The Adventures of Tom Sawyer "a boy of German parentage" memorizes eight or ten thousand bible verses but goes mad from the effort. In Huck Finn the Shepherdsons and Grangerfords go to church with their guns. On the other side, the slaves "come from all around" to see the five cent piece which they and Jim believe was given to him by the devil. We as readers know that the slaves have been duped by their own superstition and by Tom's mischief, but are we convinced that they are worse off than the people at the camp meeting who donate a total of $87.75 to that scoundrel, the King, for his mission in the Indian Ocean? Basically the author cannot predict his future and would likely return t o the same state or worse that he was previously in. He would like to have the power to end life support and not have to deal with the pain and suffering anymore. This is an example of when the author uses the technique of logos. Another reason he supports euthanasia is because he wouldnt like to put his family and friends through what they recently had to endure with him in the hospital. This view shows how the author is aware of the pain and suffering that his family and friends will have to endure. He would rather end his life, than make others worry about his situation all the time. Again at this point the author seems to use his intellect to sway the audience. There are instances of this when he uses intellectual vocabulary to explain his point. These arguments help the author support his view by giving direct examples of the negative points of not allowing Euthanasia. Later on in the article the author writes how he is mindful of the burdens placed on the community by not allowing euthanasia not being practiced. This point seems to be when the author uses extrinsic points to support his idea on this topic. He does this to show how many valuable resources are used on people on life support. Again this is another use of logos. By the author showing that he is aware of the problems placed on the community, he appears to be intellectual with the community. He believes that a better use could be made of these resources to increase opportunities and qualities for others. This shows how Hook feels that valuable time and money are wasted keeping people alive who are enduring to him unneeded pain. This is another reason why Hook supports Euthanasia. Again this is an important part of the article because it gives explanation to the authors point of view. This is a very interesting point that the author makes because at some point he was one of the people that valuable money and time were spent on to keep alive. Although Hooks article has relevance and states many strengths, I think he oversimplifies the process of Euthanasia. This is a very important flaw in his argument. By doing this I think he overlooks how big of a decision life and death really is. The article by Sidney Hook, concerning Euthanasia is very complicated. Hooks main purpose is to inform society on the dangers of not allowing Euthanasia. He does this by using the rhetorical appeals of ethos, logos and pathos. His views on the subject are quite surprising because of his personal situation. One would think that a person who was saved from ending his life-support, would not be in support of Euthanasia. Surprisingly the author not only supports the idea of Euthanasia but also gives many reasons why he is in support of the idea. Even though the authors opinion is surprising, he does a good job of explaining why he supports his views. His use of extrinsic proofs in the article can be explained to help his argument. Many supporters of Euthanasia consider these personal opinions of the author valid. Because of the authors direct first experience of being on life support, his opinion is very valuable. Also because of his direct experience he is able to use vocabulary that deals directly with the subject. This allows him to have an informative tone throughout the article. Capraro v. Dickman5 expanded on the Donoghue analysis, stating that duty of care is required when there is foreseeable harm, proximity between the parties and that holding the tortfeasor liable would be reasonable and just. Breach is the next element that needs to be proved. Basically, negligence turns on whether or not the duty of care is breached. According to Bolton v. Stone6 states that the injury must be foreseeable for there to be a breach. In that case, the plaintiff was hit by a cricket ball. However, it was not foreseeable that a cricket ball would fly out of the arena and hit a remote person, therefore, th e injury was not foreseeable and the defendants were held not be negligent and did not breach a duty of care. Overseas Tankship v. Morts Dock and Engineering Co Ltd7 also illustrates this point. In Overseas, the defendants were allowing oil to spill out on water, and they were also sending sparks into the oil on the water. The oil ignited. However, the Overseas court held that the it was not foreseeable for water to ignite, therefore the defendants were not held liable. Causation is the next element. There is direct causation, which means that the defendant directly caused injury, and proximate causation. Several cases may illustrate how this is applied, or not applied, as the case may be. York Montague Ltd., a classic example of this type of injury was stated – a mountaineer is about to go on a difficult climb, but is worried about his knee. But for the negligent medical examination the climber would not have been on the mountain climb.
